What Is A Fuel Cell
What is a Fuel Cell?
What is a fuel cell has become a pretty common question for many people throughout the world. The most basic answer is that a fuel cell converts chemical energy into an electric current through an anode/cathode reaction in an electrolyte. In order to facilitate the reaction to produce an electric current, a “fuel” (H2 or hydrogen gas for example) and also an oxidant (such as oxygen) are introduced into the fuel cell at the appropriate temperature, pressure, and purity. Recently, many colleges have started offering majors studying fuel cells and how this technology can be put to good use. There is a broad range of fuel cell types, most commonly classified by which type of electrolyte is used.
So in order to answer the question of what is a fuel cell, a lot depends on who you ask.
While fuel cells have been around since before the Apollo space missions, this technology is just now starting to reach into the mass market.
The main thing to remember about fuel cells is that they generally create an electric current by using the electron from a hydrogen atom. Beyond that, the source of this hydrogen atom varies widely. We all know that water contains hydrogen (H2O) and this fact is extremely exciting for those looking for clean sources of energy. Another very common source of this hydrogen atom is natural gas which is primarily methane (CH4). It makes sense to remember that a hydrogen atom is comprised of an electron, a proton, and a neutron and hence it is not such a leap of understanding to see how this easily becomes electricity when one remembers that the definition of an electric current is simply a flow of electrons.
Products which take advantage of converting chemical energy to electricity in a fuel cell are now starting to hit the market for use by the masses. Not only are large commercial applications becoming commonplace to provide power for buildings, but also fuel cells are finding their place in automobiles, framing nail guns, portable power generators, and seemingly is limited only by what can be imagined.
